What is PPE?

Under the PPE (EC Directive) Regulations separate requirements apply to three categories of PPE - 'complex design', 'intermediate design' and 'simple design'.

Complex Design - CATEGORY 3

PPE is defined as being 'intended to protect against mortal danger, or against dangers which may seriously and irreversibly harm the health' such as:

- garments and equipment which protect against chemicals or molten materials

- emergency equipment for use in very low temperatures

- breathing equipment which provides filtered protection against solid and liquid aerosols and irritant or dangerous gases

- breathing equipment which provides complete insulation from the atmosphere, including diving gear

- PPE providing only limited protection against
ionising radiation

- protection against falls from a height

- protection against dangers from electricity.

INTERMEDIATE Design - CATEGORY 2

PPE is intended to cover most of the hazards found in the workplace which can cause injuries or risk to health that are above slight, but below mortal, such as:

- garments and equipment which protect against welding, cutting and grinding

- low visibility

- vibration

- foul weather

- noise
