What is happening?

Certain industries already have their own detailed legislation and regulations. Rather than replace these the Government has decided to keep them (sometimes with very minor amendments) and to apply the new PPE Regulations in addition.

Among these industries are mining, construction, shipping and electricity.

Simple Design - CATEGORY 1

PPE is intended to protect the wearer against hazards which are unlikely to cause serious injury, such as:
- mechanical action with superficial effects
(gardening gloves etc)
- weak cleaning materials
- risks from handling hot components not
exceeding 50°C
- risks from non-extreme weather (headgear,
seasonal clothing etc)
- minor blows, impacts, vibrations etc which do not affect vital areas of the body (light headgear,
gloves, light footwear etc)
- sunlight (sunglasses).

All THE STANDARDS ARE summarised
on pages 26, 27, 28 & 29

PPE which is excluded from the main European regulations includes equipment manufactured for:
- the armed forces and the police
- self defence
- protection or rescue on aircraft and vessels.
