Assess the risk

Assessing the risks in your workplace is normally a matter of straightforward common sense.

Use the form on this page and go through your premises stage by stage looking for hazards which could seriously harm staff and visitors and write each of them down. These could be anything from fumes from welding to working at a height, or even poor lighting.

Then ask yourself if you can get rid of each hazard altogether so that there is no risk - for example upgrade the lighting with more efficient fluorescent tubes.

If you cannot then note who could be harmed by the hazard, particularly lone or disabled workers, inexperienced staff and visitors, and then think about the best ways of removing the risk of injury or death from that hazard without resorting to PPE -
for example, putting down non-slip flooring on slippery steps, or a screen to protect workers from molten metal splashes.

Finally, once you are sure you have done everything else practicable to eliminate or reduce the risk from the hazard, consider the most appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for those who could be exposed to the risk.

Risk should be assessed at:

Low - (there has been no evidence of it occurring in the past and there is no foreseeable possibility of it happening in the future)

MEDIUM - (there has been some evidence of it occurring in the past and it could well happen in reasonable circumstances in the future)

HIGH - (it is almost bound to happen)
