APPENDIX E

Inform the wearers

Employers are not only required to provide PPE, but they are also required to instruct their employees in its use. Regulation 9 of the PPE Regulations states that such training has to be 'adequate and appropriate'.

This training divides into:

• theory - why the PPE is being introduced, the risks it covers, how it is worn or used and employees' responsibilities in relation to it
• practice - physical demonstrations and trials of the PPE they will be wearing.

However, in addition to providing the training, employers also have the duty to ensure that employees have understood what they are being taught - are you sure they now know the what, where, when and how of using PPE?
