While the onus is on the employer to provide and ensure the
correct use of PPE, your employees also have responsibilities
- although, of course, it is your duty to make sure that they
understand these responsibilities.
Employees have to take reasonable care
of the PPE provided and report any loss, defect or concerns they may
have about its serviceability.
They
have to use it correctly and it is also partly up to them to ensure
that it fits properly. Trained employees can also carry out routine
simple maintenance - although the HSE guidance on the PPE Regulations
states that the manufacturers must carry out maintenance work if the
equipment is complex.
