Employers must

ASSESS THE RISK
• Make a full assessment of any risks to health and safety which cannot be avoided in other ways.

• Decide which PPE is right for the job, including:
- the correct types of PPE for the risks and the conditions in the workplace

- the correct quality of materials and design -
since July 1995 equipment should comply with European standards, and new equipment purchased after this date should be CE marked
(see below under manufacturers' duties)

- the correct size and that it is appropriate
for each user

- the correct components are compatible
with each other

• Re-assess requirements whenever there is a significant change in risks or circumstances.

PROVIDE PPE
• Supply the right PPE at no charge to the wearer

MANAGE USAGE
• Ensure that the PPE is used properly at all times

MAINTAIN PPE PERFORMANCE
• Have all PPE cleaned, maintained and replaced whenever necessary to ensure that it is always in efficient working order
• Set up a system which enables faults or problems with PPE to be reported and dealt with quickly
• Provide storage which:

- keeps PPE protected from contamination, loss or damage

- separates dirty, damaged or contaminated PPE from that which is ready to be used

- is safe for PPE which contains hazardous materials like asbestos
