ASSESS THE RISK
Make a full assessment of any risks to health and safety
which cannot be avoided in other ways.
Decide which PPE is right for the job, including:
- the correct types of PPE for the risks and the conditions in
the workplace
- the correct quality of materials and design -
since July 1995 equipment should comply with European standards,
and new equipment purchased after this date should be CE marked
(see below under manufacturers' duties)
- the correct size and that it is appropriate
for each user
- the correct components are compatible
with each other
Re-assess requirements whenever there is a significant
change in risks or circumstances.
PROVIDE PPE
Supply the right PPE at no charge to the wearer
MANAGE USAGE
Ensure that the PPE is used properly at all times
MAINTAIN PPE PERFORMANCE
Have all PPE cleaned, maintained and replaced whenever
necessary to ensure that it is always in efficient working order
Set up a system which enables faults or problems with PPE
to be reported and dealt with quickly
Provide storage which:
- keeps PPE protected from contamination, loss or damage
- separates dirty, damaged or contaminated PPE from that which
is ready to be used
- is safe for PPE which contains hazardous materials like asbestos
